Box Score Franklin Springs, Ga – A long time Conference rivalry between Emmanuel College and Barton College plays out again in tonight's game at the Shaw Athletic Center.
After COVID delays and rescheduling, the Lady Lions and Lady Bulldogs final faced off in a game filled with intense rivalry and competition.
The Bulldogs opened up the game with a winning tip off from #23, Shanika Peterkin resulting in an immediate layup for Barton.
The first quarter proved to be filled with fast work from the Bulldogs, ending 16-11 Barton. Emmanuel continued to fight for the win, with a game total free throw percentage of 90%.
The second quarter amped up the rivalry as Lion #23, Breanna Locke, received a technical foul. The first half ended with a close score, 31-27, with Barton up by 4 points.
The matchup in the paint between Lion #23Breanna Locke and Bulldog #23 Shanika Peterkin was intense throughout the entire game. Both strong posts fought for points and rebounds to gain the lead for their team.
The top scorers for the Bulldogs were #23 Shanika Peterkin with 19, #33 Jami Tham-Morrobel with 18, and #30 Lauren Walker with 12. The top scorers for the Lions were #23 Breanna Locke and #2 Jazmin Allen.
The second half opened with the Lions coming out of the locker room fired up, scoring 18 points in the quarter, opposed to the Bulldogs 11. The third quarter ended in a score switch as the Lions took the lead 45-42.
The spirit of rivalry was high as the game progressed, each team competing with maximum effort in order to gain hold of the Conference win. Lions Head Coach Mike Bona received two technical fouls in the second half, resulting in his ejection from the game in the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was point for point as each team battled for the win. The Ladies tied up the score and each team traded fouls and free throws until the final minutes of the game. The result of this intense fourth quarter placed Barton on top by one basket, 62-60, a tough loss for the Lions and a great win for the Bulldogs.
Ultimately, the rivalry between Emmanuel and Barton is always intense and provides for great basketball each time the teams go head to head.
