Box Score CENTRAL, SC - Women's volleyball defeated Conference Carolinas opponent Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Lions to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The first set began with the Lions taking an early four point lead, 9-5. The Lions continued to hold the lead until it was 21-17. SWU managed to score a few more points and remain close to the Lions, but a four point run by the Lions gave them the set, 25-21.
The second set was a seesaw of momentum swings. The Lions took a three point lead several times early on, but the Warriors managed to rally and tie the set each time. However, the momentum went entirely to the Lions late in the set. Two kills each from juniors Mia Cotton and Aleksandra Hamuda led to a four point run that gave the Lions the set by six points, 25-18.
The Lions began the third set with an ace by sophomore Gabi Reagan and a kill from Cotton. The Warriors responded to keep the set close early on. However, the Lions once again took control and started running away with the set, taking it by seven points, 25-18.
The Lions were led by Conference Carolinas player of the week Mia Cotton, who finished with 12 kills, 11 digs, and hit .500 (season high). Aleksandra Hamuda followed with 10 kills, hitting .261. Freshman Emily Hanson had 9 kills and hit .368.
Next up, women's volleyball will continue conference play against Chowan University on Friday, March 12.
