Franklin Springs, GA – The Emmanuel Women's Wrestling team continued competition today in the NCAA Regionals hosted at the Shaw Athletic Center. The Lions entered the day with 9 wrestlers in action and ended the day with 3 Regional Champions and 6 Lions heading to the NCAA National Championship on March 6-7 in Coralville, IA.
As a team, the Lions finished 2nd in region behind Presbyterian College.
Rebekkah Jean-Baptiste – Region Champion at 103 lbs.
- After a first-round bye, Jean-Baptiste def. Chloe Simmons of Randolph by tech fall (10-0, 3:39).
- Next, Jean-Baptiste faced Lilian Prendergast of Mount Olive and won in a tightly contested decision, 10-8 for a trip to the regional finals.
- In the finals, Jean-Baptiste dominated Sloane Kruger of Presbyterian, 11-4 to earn the regional title.
Karissa Turnwall – Region Champion at 117 lbs.
- After a first-round bye, Turnwall def. Ariana Carnahan of McDaniel by decision (6-0, 1:16).
- In the semifinals, Turnwall faced Amelia Murphy of King University and won via fall (2-0, 0:45).
- In the final, Turnwall faced Jenna Anderson of Presbyterian and won by decision 6-0 to earn the regional title.
Janida Garcia – Region Champion at 131 lbs.
- In her first match of the tournament, Garcia def. Alize Franze of McDaniel by tech fall (10-0, 0:45).
- Next, she faced Marielle Hirkala of Randolph who she beat by tech fall (11-0, 1:34).
- In the semifinals, Garcia def. Joy Cantu of King University by tech fall (10-0, 3:34).
- In the finals, she defeated Kassey Daugherty of Presbyterian by decision (7-0).
Also qualifying for Nationals from Emmanuel were
Vida Beckel (160 lbs.),
Alexandra Ford (145 lbs.), and
Gemma Templeman (180 lbs.) who all finished the weekend with a 3
rd place finish in their weight class.
