Drug policy

DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

All student-athletes must participate in the Department of Athletics' substance abuse education testing program. Each student-athlete shall be subject to urine testing and
shall provide urine samples for such testing as requested by Department staff. It is understood that the taking of the sample will be done in a manner that is not degrading or offensive to the student-athlete. Each student-athlete must sign an NCAA Drug Testing Consent form indicating agreement to comply with this policy to practice and compete in Emmanuel College intercollegiate athletics. Consequences of positive test results can be found in the Emmanuel Athletics Banned Substance Policy.

Procedure:

The Department of Athletics will inform the student-athlete about substance abuse policies (requirements and procedures) of both Emmanuel College and the NCAA. Athletes will be given written information on both policies by an athletic administrator prior to his/her initial participation each year and asked to sign the NCAA Drug-Testing Consent Form and the Consent and Release of Information form.

The drug-testing program involves urine collection at NCAA championship events and random on- campus visits and laboratory analysis for substances on a list of banned drugs developed by the NCAA Executive Committee. This list includes illegal drugs as well as many over-the-counter medications. In addition, Emmanuel College, using an independent private testing firm, will from time to time screen or test members of all athletic teams for the presence of illicit drugs. All test results will be reported to the Athletic Director. The Athletic Director will notify the head coach of the sport in which the team member competes of any test in which an individual urine sample has a positive result. Student-athletes will be notified of selection for testing through written notification prior to the scheduled testing time. The Director of Sports Medicine along with members of the athletic training staff will give the written notification to the head coach of the sport and to the student-athlete to be tested. Selected laboratory guidelines will be used for sample collection.

Tests will be conducted for marijuana, cocaine, and amphetamines. In addition, the Department of Athletics reserves the right to test for anabolic steroid s or any other drugs banned by NCAA regulations. In the event that a student-athlete is dismissed from or discontinues their participation in the sport, the athlete in question will still be subject to all institutional drug testing. The director of student life has the right to use the athletic independent testing firm.

Student-athletes could be institutionally drug tested sometime during the academic year. In addition, the NCAA is involved with urine collection and testing at NCAA championship events and random on-campus visits. Student-athletes should always consult the Sports Medicine staff to review the list of NCAA banned- drug classes whenever buying over-the-counter, non-prescription drugs or supplements. Many products (e.g., herbal teas, energy bars, Co-Tylenol, Sudafed, etc.) that can be purchased contain NCAA banned substances. It
is very important that student-athletes take initiative and notify the Sports Medicine staff of any medication or supplements that he/she is currently using or intend to use. Any questions should be cleared with an athletic trainer first. Conversely, before receiving a prescription from a medical provider, the student-athlete should let him or her know of the NCAA banned drug classes. Either way, the student- athlete must declare any type of drug being used to the Sports Medicine staff prior to the drug test. Failure to appear or submit a sample for institutional drug tests will be treated as a positive test result.
