2017 Leo Athletic Awards
Coach of the Year: Allen Gilchrest (Swimming)
- 2017 ECAC Coach of the Meet, this was a real honor considering there were 27 NCAA Div. I teams that participated in the meet.
- 2016 CSCAA Distinguished Service Award, for 15 years of service.
- Men won the 2017 ASC Conference Championships.
- 32 Conference Champions (Winning 17 out of the 19 events, including all 5 relays)
- Set 14 conference records (Alex Sobers earned ASC Conference MVP)
- Men's team ranked as high as #3 in the country during the season, for NCAA Div. II.
- 10-1 Dual meet record.
- Runner up, Conference Champions 2nd place finish women's swimming at the ASC Conference Championships. The team finished 2nd overall out of 13 teams.
- Women's team had 9 Conference Champions.
Male Athlete of the Year: Codey Chaney (Men’s Wrestling)
- 28-1 Individual Record for 2016-17 season
- Was selected to 1st Team ECAC Conference
- Defeated top ranked Division 2 wrestler
- Won his second National Title.
Female Athlete of the Year: Destiny Harper (Women’s Bowling)
- Ranked #1 in the Nation in Average Differential (over 700 Collegiate women Bowlers)
- Ranked #2 in the Nation in Overall Average
- 3 Tournament All-Event Championships
- 5 All-Tournament Team Selections
- USBC Collegiate 1st Team All-American
- Finalist for USBC Female Collegiate Bowler of the Year
- Finalist for U.S. Collegiate Bowling Writers Female Collegiate Bowler of the Year
- Will be named on 4/19/17
- Highest Tournament Average in School History, Men or Women
Men's Team of the Year: Men's Swimming
- Olympian - Alex Sobers. First EC athlete to compete in Olympic Games and World Championships.
- National Champion - Stanislas Raczynski. Won the 5K open water Collegiate National Championships and set the first EC national record for EC swimming.
- Conference Champions - Men won the 2017 ASC Conference Championships.
- 32 Conference Champions (Winning 17 out of the 19 events, including all 5 relays)

- Alex Sobers - Ranked #3 in NCAA Div. II during the season, in 3 events (100 free, 200 free, 500 free)
- Fall 2016 NCAA Div. II Academic All-American Team (5th semester in a row!)
Women's Team of the Year: Women's Tennis
Biggest Upset of the Year: Men's Soccer
- Won first round of the NCCAA National Tournament, defeating the #1 seeded Campbellsville (who were ranked #6 Nationally in NAIA) by the score of 2-0 en route to a tournament run to the NCCAA National Championship game.
Record Breaking Team Performance: Men's Soccer
- Making it to the NCCAA National Championship match was the first time in the history of the program.
- Final National NCCAA Rankings of #2 at the end of the season. First time in history of the program.
- 2 freshmen were named to the NCCAA All-American 1st team- Danny Cameron, Andrew Dunnett.
Record Breaking Male Performance of the Year: Alex Sobers (Men’s Swimming)
- At the 2017 ASC Conference Championships won all 7 of his events (3 individual and 4 relay-100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 400 medley relay)
- All 7 in new ASC conference record time
- All 7 in NCAA national qualifying times
- A 7-time conference champion in 1 meet!
- All this lead to the team winning their first conference championships by a dominant 120 points!
- Male MVP of the conference championships.
Record Breaking Female Performance of the Year: Clare Monges (Women’s Swimming)
- At the 2017 ASC Conference Championships won 3 events (1 individual and 2 relays with the help of her teammates!)
- All 7 of her events at the ASC Championships were new EC school records
- 3 time ASC Conference Champion - 100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 free relay
- 2 time ASC Conference Record holder - 100 fly, 400 free relay
- 4 time ASC Conference Runner up - 100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay, 800 free relay
Best Female Newcomer of the Year: Stephanie Hardy (Women’s Volleyball)
- Started as a Setter in 72 out of 88 sets.
- NCCAA First Team All Region
- 2nd Team NCCAA All American (first All American for EC Volleyball)
- EC Athlete of the week
- Finished the season ranked 2nd in assists in Conference Carolinas (just .06 points behind 1st place, senior setter from Erskine).
- Carries a 3.8 GPA.
Best Male Newcomer of the Year: Pedro Illescas (Men’s Swimming)
- 25-1 record during the dual meet season (only loss is to his teammate Adrian Aleksandrowicz, in the 100 back)
- 6 time ASC Conference Champion (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 back, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 800 free relay)
- 6 conference Records (set the ASC Conference record in all 6 events he swam)
- Earned NCAA National Championship qualifying times in 8 different events
- Finished in the top 5 in all 6 events at the 2017 ECAC Championships (NCAA Div. I, II, & III teams competed)
- Ranked as high as #2 in NCAA Div. II during the season, in 3 events (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 back)
Most Community Service Hours: Men's Lacrosse (Over 400 hours)
