FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- The Emmanuel Soccer Lions faced off against the Bruins of Bob Jones University on Saturday, with both teams looking to pick up an NCCAA South Conference win.
The Lions started the game the better of the two teams as they moved the ball well in the opening minutes. The Lions were able to generate several scoring opportunities in the first half but they were unable to take advantage of these opportunities. The Lions defended well in the first half, as they stopped the Bruins from registering a shot on goal. The teams would go into the half goalless.
As the second half started both teams went in search of the opening goal, Emmanuel had several chances to open the scoring but a combination of poor finishing and a Bruins goalkeeper in excellent form would put a stop to that.
The Lions eventually found the breakthrough in the 67th minute when Cole Redman lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper and Martin Mitreski was in the right place at the right time to apply the finish. The Lions lead would not last long as the Bruins found an equalizer through Jared Simmons in the 73rd minute.
The Lions had more chances to win the game late on but failed to capitalize and the teams would go into overtime tied at 1-1.
Coach Borchers challenged the Lions to raise their game and finish the tie early on. The Lions responded well through senior forward Alex Wright who fired the game winner with just 2 minutes gone in overtime. Wright gathered the ball in the box and engineered just enough space to bend the ball into the opposite corner past the Bruins goalkeeper, giving the Lions a 2-1 victory.
The Lions return to NCAA conference action on Thursday night when they travel to take on North Greenville University, with kick of set for 7pm.
