Box Score Franklin Springs, GA- It was another tough game for the Emmanuel College Soccer Lions on Saturday evening as they took on the Bobcats of Lees-McRae. With steady rainfall the previous night conditions for play would prove to be very difficult.
With the water holding on the field both teams struggled to get into any sort of rhythm early on. With the conditions it was proving to be a game of minimal chances, and when the Bobcats were gifted a chance Pol Vassart was at hand to put the visitors into the lead in the 15th minute. The Lions pushed to get back into the game but were unable to find an equalizing goal before the half.
The Lions tried to use the conditions to their advantage as they pressed the Bobcats high up the field and tried to force a defensive error. It was from this high press that they found their way back into the game as Blair Springhill won the ball and played it across the goal and Martin Mitreski was there to force the ball over the line. The game ended tied at 1-1 after the initial 90 minutes, so the teams would enter overtime.
It was in the second period of overtime when Emmanuel got the winning goal, as Blair Springhill set Jordan Davis through on goal and on the second time of asking managed to force the ball over the line.
Coach Borchers was delighted with the result and commended the team on a gritty performance against a very good team.
Although the true heroes of the day have to be Jake Young and Carlos Velez as they worked tirelessly for hours making sure the field was playable.
The win moves the Lions to 4-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play.
The soccer Lions are in action again on Thursday as they take on Columbia International University at home with kick-off scheduled for 6pm.
