Women's Volleyball Plays for Breast Cancer Awareness

Box Score

Franklin Springs, GA - The Women's Volleyball Team returned to the court after a week off to take on the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan. While attempting to bring home another win, the Lady Lions had their focus set on a greater cause, Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Lady Lions were all pinked out tonight and the stands were filled with supporters as tonights match was a Dig Pink event, in honor of all those who have battled with or have loved ones who have battled with breast cancer. After the second set was finished, the Lions honored Nancy Cobb, a mathematics instructor at Emmanuel College who battled with breast cancer. Nancy was declared cancer free in March of 2012 and believes the purpose of the trial was to create a testimony for the Lord.
Before the honoring of Nancy, set one started with intensity as both teams came out swinging. A few huge kills from Emmanuel's Erica Burnham got the crowd excited as the score was tied 5-5. With a combination of powerful blocks and big hits, however, SWU was able to pull away taking the set 25-14.
The second set started well for the Warriors as they went on a 5 point streak. The streak was finally ended with a dump from Libby Bradford. A few more kills from the lions put some points on the board, but SWU was able to pull away making it difficult for the Lions to come back. Emmanuel wasn't discouraged, however, some big kills from Abby Bradford and impressive digs by Nicole Kraning brought the Lions out of a 6 point deficit to tie the score 18-18. The final stretch saw the Warriors close it out 25-21.
Set three started well for the Lions as they were able to take the initial lead this time 6-4. An even battle kept the score within a couple points up to the 12 point mark, then a four point run for SWU forced the Lions to call a timeout. With momentum on their side, SWU easily finished the third set 25-15, sweeping the Lions 3-0. The Lions were led by Erica Burnham with 10 kills and Abby Bradford with 7 kills.
Emmanuel continues competition tomorrow against North Greenville at 2:00. NGU swept the Lions 3-0 in their previous match.
