Lions Lose Five Set Thriller to Crusaders

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga - The men's volleyball team took on the North Greenville University Crusaders on Wednesday night. The Lions fell to the Crusaders, 3-2. 
 
The first set was full of momentum shifts as there were 8 lead changes and 12 ties. The back and forth exchange resulted in a tied score at 26-26. An error from the Lions and a kill from the Crusaders eventually gave NGU the set, 28-26. 
 
The Crusaders charged in the second set, building a 9 point lead, 18-9. The Lions put together an 8-2 run, bringing themselves back into the set as NGU only led by 3 points, 20-17. However, a couple errors from the Lions and a pair of kills for the Crusaders gave NGU the second set, 25-19. 
 
NGU carried their momentum into the third set, leading 10-7 early on. However, the Lions racked up 5 unanswered points, giving them the lead, 12-10. The set went back and forth for a bit, but eventually the Lions were able to maintain the momentum, taking the set, 25-22. 
 
With the game now sent into a fourth set, the Lions continued to hold the momentum, taking a 10-5 lead. NGU put together a run in the middle of the set, drawing back within 2 points, 16-14. However, Emmanuel started heating up again, eventually taking the set with a kill from senior Aleksa Lakic, 25-19. 
 
The Crusaders started off the fifth set with 3 consecutive points. The Lions answered back with 3 of their own to tie the game. The final set remained close, but NGU consistently held a 1 point advantage. A service error from the Crusaders tied the game up at 13 and another error from the Crusaders gave the Lions the 1 point advantage, 14-13. However, NGU reclaimed the lead with back-to-back kills, 15-14. One final error from the Lions gave the Crusaders the set, 16-14, and the game, 3-2. 
 
The Lions were led by senior Aleksa Lakic, who recorded 22 kills and 7 digs. Senior Don Thompson followed with 18 kills and 6 digs. Sophomore Ray Peterson recorded a season high 15 digs. 
 
Next up, men's volleyball will face Reinhardt University on Thursday, March 5.
