FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The men's soccer team fell to the Mount Olive Trojans in double overtime, 2-1. The senior day match came down to the wire, but ends Emmanuel's hopes of making the playoffs as they are now 3-8 in conference play.
Neither team was able to score in the first half as they battled for possession in heavy rain. Both teams got several shots off in the difficult conditions, but none found the net.
The Lions were the ones to break the scoreless streak, doing so just four minutes into the second half. The goal came when Alexander Panner scored off an assist from Albert Bajrami. Nine minutes later, the Trojans got a penalty kick after the Lions committed a foul in the box. Freshman goalkeeper Rodrigo De La Terga had an incredible save on the attempt, but before the Lions could finish celebrating the officials ruled that he moved forward before the kick, giving UMO another try. This time they converted, and the tough break for the Lions tied the match, 1-1. Neither team was able to score throughout the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
The first 10 minute of overtime remained scoreless, forcing the game to extend an additional 10 minutes. After 103 minutes of play, Mount Olive scored to win the game, giving the Lions a heartbreaking loss in double overtime.
Emmanuel took 9 shots, 3 of them on goal. UMO finished with 21, 8 of them on target.
