HUNTSVILLE, AL - Women's volleyball played their last match of the UAH Invitational against Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday. The Lions defeated the Tigers 3-0, moving their record to 1-2.
Emmanuel took control early in the first set, building a five-point lead, 12-7. The Tigers fought back within two but kills from sophomore Emily Hanson and senior Aleksandra Hamuda were followed by an ace for senior Victoria Alexander, once again extending Emmanuel's lead, 15-10. OBU tried to stay in the set but were unable to catch up as the Lions captured it, 25-22.
The Tigers had the momentum early in the second, gaining an early lead, 4-1. However, it was short lived as the Lions roared to an unanswered 9-point run, giving them the advantage, 10-4. The Tigers responded with a run of their own, slowly able to claw their way back in the set as they tied the score at 13. The lead proceeded to change several times until OBU gained a two-point advantage, 20-18. A pair of kills from Hamuda were followed with kills by senior Taylor Roberts and freshman Madi Roop as the Lions battled their way back into the lead, 23-22. A pair of errors from the Tigers gave the Lions the set, 25-23.
The third was the most evenly matched set so far, with the two teams exchanging points and side outs. Halfway through, OBU gained their largest lead of the set, 13-10. A kill from Roop was followed with back-to-back by Hamuda, while sophomore Isabella Appling recorded a service ace to tie the score at 14. With both teams tied at 17, a pair of kills from senior Mia Cotton was followed by back-to-back service aces from senior Kaitlynn Henderson. The Tigers could only score one more point as Emmanuel's dominate run gave them the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
The Lions were led by Aleksandra Hamuda, who finished with 13 kills, 5 digs, 1 block, and a hitting percentage of .278. Taylor Roberts followed with 8 kills, an ace, and a hitting percentage of .333. Additionally, she recorded a season high 5 blocks.
Sophomore Gabrielle McGlamery recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs, while senior Victoria Alexander finished with 12 digs. Additionally, Alexander had an impressive serving performance with 3 aces, while Kaitlyn Henderson recorded 2 aces.
Next up, women's volleyball will head to the Sunshine State to compete in the 2021 Bash at the Beach, hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University September 10 and 11.
