BRISTOL, TN - The men's basketball team played the King University Tornado on Sunday. After the matchup was postponed a day, it was the Tornado who came out on top, 100-93. After trailing by 23 points at halftime, the Lions flirted with a historic comeback before King was able to put it away. The loss moves Emmanuel's record to 8-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
With the Tornado leading 15-13 early on, the Lions gave up a 6-0 run that gave them an 8 point deficit. King's advantage continued to grow as they dominated the first half, running away to a 23 point lead, 57-34.
The Lions trailed by as much as 26 points in the first half, but came out with a vengeance in the second. They began with an 11-4 run over the first five minutes, beginning a slow climb back into contention. At the six minute mark Emmanuel got back within single digits for the first time since early in the game as they trailed by 8 points, 81-73. A three point play by senior Brandon Simpson with just under two minutes remaining got the Lions back within four points. Then, a pair of converted free throws for sophomore KJ Jones II got Emmanuel back within a possession for the first time in 33 minutes, 91-94 with 69 seconds on the clock. Fouls by the Lions led to the Tornado closing out the game at the free throw line as they eventually won the game, 100-93.
The Lions were led by KJ Jones II, who finished with a career-best 37 points. This marked the sixth game in his career that Jones has passed 30 points. He's also leading the conference in scoring for the season, averaging 21 points per game. Jones added 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Brandon Simpson followed with 18 points.
