Women's Soccer falls short in Penalty Kicks

Pembroke, NC --- #6 Emmanuel College Women's Soccer took on #3 UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, NC for the second round of the Conference Carolinas Championship. 

Emmanuel came out looking punch their ticket to the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship and upset a high seed UNC Pembroke. The first half of play would be exciting for the Lions. Emmanuel would put up 5 shots, 1 of which would be saved by the Braves goalie, Chiara Coppin, 3 that would sail high and wide and 1 that would result in a goal for the Lions. The Braves would put up 8 shots, 6 of which would be saved by Lion's goalie, Hannah Thompson and 2 of which would sail wide. The Lions would come out to an early lead a just 8 minutes and 2 seconds into the first half. A pass by Elizabeth Barnhart would find Rachel Wegesend who would take the shot and score. The Lions would go up 1-0 heading into the first half.

The Lions came out looking to score and take the lead in the second half of play. Both teams would come quiet into the second half. UNCP would put up an additional 13 shots, 5 of which Hannah Thompson would make clutch saves and the other 8 would sail high and wide. The Lions wouldn't put up any additional shots in the second half. With less than 60 seconds left, the Braves would tie the game at 89:14. This would force the game into overtime. 
 
The first and second overtime played would result in nothing for the Lions or the Hawks. At the end of two OT, it would be determined that the deciding factor of the game would be made in penalty kicks at 110 minutes into the game. Olivia Weider would step up for the first PK for the Lions and it would soar past goalie, Coppin into the net. Now was the Braves turn, they would shoot and Thompson would barely miss. Next up for the Lions would be none other than Carina Widauer. She shot and he scored, putting the lions up 2-1 in PK's! Once again Braves would take their turn and this time, it would be just out of the reach of Thompson, tying the game 2-2. Stepping up next for the Lions would be Briana Bishop. Bishop knew the job she had to accomplish and she did just that, putting the Lions up 3-2 over the Braves. Braves would step up for their 3rd attempt and once again it would be just out of reach for goalie Hannah Thompson, knotting the score up 3-3. The Lions send Emilia Dingwall up next and she would score. Braves would once again answer the call and tie the score up 4-4. The final moments of play would come down to Madison Nimmons of the Lions and Ashleigh Harris of the Braves. Nimmons would just miss the Lions goal which would force the Braves to score for the win or miss to move on to more PK's. Braves would shoot and Thompson would barely miss the ball giving the Braves the advantage and the win 5-4 in penalty kicks. 
 
The Lady Lions had an amazing season going 7-5 overall in conference and 9-8-2 overall for the season. They now take a break and begin to prepare for the 2023 season ahead of them.
