3-Point and Free Throw Struggles Result in OT Loss to Patriots, 78-80

FLORENCE, SC - The Emmanuel College Men's Basketball team traveled to Florence, SC, to compete against conference opponent Francis Marion University. The Lions took the game into overtime, but 2 last second free-throws by the Patriots led to a 80-78 loss. With the loss, the Lions move to 18-8 (17-5 CC) heading towards the end of their season. 
 
The two teams traded the lead for much of the 1st half and found themselves tied 21-21 with 10:27 remaining in the 1sthalf. The teams continued to keep the game close, remaining tied at 30-30 with 3 minutes in the half. The Patriots finished the half outscoring Emmanuel 6-2, entering the 2nd half with a 36-32 lead. The teams continued to switch leads for the beginning of the 2nd half as Emmanuel was down 57-59 with 8 minutes remaining. However, the Lions went on a scoring run, earning their highest lead of 8 points with 1:49 in the game. However, FMU put up an impressive 8 points in the final 1:25 of the game, including a last-second shot, tying the game at 70-70 to take the game into overtime. The Lions had a slow start in overtime, finding themselves down 4 with 1:26 remaining. However, Emmanuel tied the game 78-78 with 22 seconds remaining. After a controversial foul was called on KJ Jones II with 17 seconds left, FMU hit 2 crucial free-throws to win the game 80-78. 
 
The Lions shot 40.4% (23-57) from the field. They shot 20.8% (5-25) from behind the 3-point line and 65.9% (27-41) at the free-throw line. Much of their production came from under the basket, scoring 30 points in the paint. They showed an impressive defensive performance, scoring 20 points off turnovers. Also, the bench proved to be an important factor, accounting for 20 of Emmanuel's points.
 
Jayvion Rucker led the Lions with a double-double, scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. KJ Jones II finished the game with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Brandon Simpson scored 13 points and recorded 4 rebounds. Tyonn Stuckey finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Off the bench, Kendall Latney scored 9 points and 4 rebounds. 
 
The Lions will finish their regular season with a matchup against conference opponent Converse University on February 24th in Spartanburg, SC, at 7:00 PM.
