Lions Drop Nailbiter to Patriots

FLORENCE, SC - The Emmanuel College women's basketball team traveled to Florence, SC, to compete against conference opponent Francis Marion University. Despite leading late in the game, the Lions were defeated when Francis Marion hit a last second jumper. The Lions got a chance at a hero shot, but tough defense by the Patriots cost Emmanuel the victory, 62-63.
 
The Lions had a slow start to the 1st quarter, finding themselves down 9-0 with 6:30 remaining in the quarter. After this scoreless start, the Lions proceeded to outscore the Patriots 16-4, finishing the quarter up by 3 points. The two teams kept the game even throughout the 2nd quarter, and after many lead changes, Emmanuel trailed FMU 32-34 at the end of the half. The teams continued to keep the game close, finding themselves tied 39-39 with 4:56 remaining in the 3rd quarter. However, Emmanuel finished the quarter on a 11-6 run, leading the Patriots 51-45. Emmanuel earned their highest lead of the game halfway through the 4th quarter, leading FMU 58-49. However, FMU finished the game outscoring Emmanuel 14-4. A. Oliver hit a jumper with 9 seconds remaining for FMU, winning the game by 1 at 63-62. 
 
The Lions shot 41.0% (25-61) as a team from the field. They shot 31.3% (5-16) from behind the 3-point line and 63.6% (7-11) at the free-throw line. Most of their production came from under the basket, scoring 36 points in the paint. 
 
Jazmin Allen led the Lions with a double-double, scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds. Allen also finished with 3 assists. Jeanetta Elder finished the game with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Allison Smith finished the game with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. 
 
The Lions will finish their regular season on February 24th (Thu) when they travel to Spartanburg, SC, to compete against conference opponent Converse University at 5:00 PM.
