Lions Overcome Hawks with Pair of Late Goals, 19-17

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The women's lacrosse team hosted Shorter University on Thursday afternoon. The Lions defeated the Hawks, 19-17, thanks to a pair of late goals from Anna Gill. The victory moves Emmanuel's record to 3-2. 

First period:

The Lions opened up scoring with a pair of quick goals, making the score 2-0, Emmanuel. However, the Hawks quickly responded with four in a row to take an early lead. By the end of the high scoring quarter the Hawks held a two goal advantage, 7-5. 

Second period:

The Hawks scored quickly in the second, increasing their lead to three. A goal by Justine Dorelas was followed with another score by the Hawks. However, Dorelas responded once more with her second straight goal to make the score 7-9. Dorelas then added a third score in the period, pulling the Lions within one, 8-9. Five minutes later Anna Gill scored for the Lions, tying the score at 9. The Lions would add one more goal, but Shorter scored twice making the score 11-10 at the half.

Third period:

Emmanuel found the net quickly to start the second half, tying the score at 11. The pace slowed down over the next ten minutes. Each team scored twice more, tying it at 13 by the end of the third.

Fourth period:

A pair of quick scores by Emmanuel to open the fourth gave them their largest lead of the day, 15-13. After a goal by the Hawks, Anna Gill responded with another for the Lions. After a hard fought period, the score was tied at 17 with two minutes to go. With the game on the line, Gill scored back to back goals, sealing the victory for the Lions, 19-17. 

Anna Gill led the way with an impressive 9 goals, while Justine Dorelas followed with 5 of her own. Christine Nguyen found the net three times for the Lions. 

Next up, women's lacrosse will begin conference play at Lees-McRae College on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00pm.
