Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Lions Top Battlers via Dominant Hitting

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The men's volleyball team hosted Alderson Broaddus University on Friday night. The Lions defeated the Battlers, 3-1, moving Emmanuel's record to 7-8 on the year.

Set 1:

The Lions hit an extremely impressive .478 in the opener. The last five points for the Lions were kills recorded by different players in white and gold. A kill by freshman Daniel Beachum was followed by sophomores Eli Zdonek and Carlos Guerrero taking turns. After a dump by junior setter Henrik Westhoff, sophomore Jayden Young finished it off to give the Lions the set, 25-20.

Set 2:

The most dominate set of the evening was achieved by highly productive offense (hitting .409) and excellent defense as they held the Battlers to a percentage of -0.130. Freshman Gustavo Cavalcanti accounted for 7 of Emmanuel's 12 kills in the stanza as the Lions took it comfortably, 25-14.

Set 3:

The Lions led 15-11 after an ace from Young. However, a 6-2 rally from the Battlers locked the score at 17. The teams traded points for a few rallies, but another late push by ABU gave them their lone set win of the encounter, 25-23.

Set 4:

The Lions outdid their own best hitting performance in the fourth, achieving a season-best mark of .583 at the net. Every Lion that touched the floor, barring the libero, recorded a kill in the set as Emmanuel tallied 15 kills to just 1 error in 24 swings. Guerrero and Cavalcanti led the way with four each as the Lions took the closer by half a dozen, 25-19.

Gustavo Cavalcanti played just three sets but recorded 17 kills in 25 swings, hitting an impressive .560. The freshman added 7 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 aces. Carlos Guerrero followed with 10 kills, 5 digs, and 3 blocks, hitting .333. Henrik Westhoff recorded a double-double with 49 assists and 10 digs. The setter added 2 kills and an ace to the effort.

Next up, men's volleyball will host Fort Valley State on Saturday, March 12 at 6:00pm.
