Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hawks Knock Lions Out of Tournament

SPARTANBURG, SC - The women's basketball team continued postseason play in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Championship on Friday.

After defeating No. 9 Lees-McRae and upsetting No. 5 UNC Pembroke earlier this week, the No. 8 seed Lions faced No. 4 Chowan in the quarterfinals. The Hawks defeated the Lions, 55-47, sending Chowan to the semifinals and finishing the season for Emmanuel.

First quarter:

It was a slow start offensively for both teams. After a couple of scoreless minutes, it was Chowan who took it to the basket first. The Hawks scored six unanswered points before junior Jazmin Allen put up the first basket of the night for Emmanuel. With under two minutes on the clock, the Lions added five points in 30 seconds. This led to a one possession game after 10 minutes as the Lions trailed by three, 7-10.

Second quarter:

Senior Lexie Sengkhammee quickly took it all the way on the first possession of the second quarter, making the score 9-10. Chowan scored six unanswered over the next four minutes until sophomore Sydney Wyatt drained a three pointer to make the score 12-16. Freshman Mackenzie Caldwell then entered the game and scored quickly, drawing the Lions within a possession. After a couple of defensive stands, junior Jeanetta Elder proceeded to record her first bucket of the evening, drawing the contest square at 16. After a pair of free throws by the Hawks, junior Lindsey Pruitt because the seventh lady in blue and gold to score. However, the Hawks closed the half on a 6-0 run, giving the Lions an 18-24 disadvantage at the break.

Third quarter:

Wyatt and Elder were the first to score for Emmanuel in the second half. Three straight buckets for Elder pulled the Lions even with the Hawks at 26. After a put-back by Chowan, senior Allison Smith cashed a corner three to give the Lions their first lead of the night, 29-28. Elder added another to make the score 31-28 and force the Hawks to use their first timeout of the half. The Lions increased their lead off a free throw and layup from Wyatt. However, with the score 35-30, the Hawks closed out the period with six straight, taking a one point lead to close the quarter, 36-35.

Fourth quarter:

Junior Reyonna Hopkins scored the first point of the final period from the free throw line. The Lions then quickly forced a turnover that led to Hopkins getting a put-back layup that gave Emmanuel the lead, 38-36. After two scoreless minutes for both teams, Wyatt took it to the rim to reach 12 points on the night. The Hawks answered with a pair of layups as the score continued to flip flop. With five minutes of regulation remaining it was the Hawks by one, 41-40. A three-pointer by Chowan was followed with a pair of free throws by Allen, making the score 44-42 Chowan. The Hawks then put together a 6-1 run, giving themselves a 50-43 advantage with under a minute remaining. The Lions were forced to intentionally foul, but Chowan consistently made their free throws to seal the game, 55-47.

Sydney Wyatt finished with 14 points and 3 rebounds. Jeanetta Elder put up 12 and grabbed 11 boards, while Jazmin Allen pulled in 12 rebounds and scored 6.

This concludes the 2021-22 season for women's basketball.
