DUNCAN, SC - The #6 seed Emmanuel softball team remained in the winners bracket and advanced to Saturday after defeating the #7 seed UNC Pembroke Braves 6-3 on Friday.
The Braves pulled off an upset on Thursday when they defeated #2 seed Mount Olive, while the Lions' upset of #3 Barton led to this matchup in the winners bracket. With the win, Emmanuel joins King as the only undefeated squads remaining in the championship. The Lions and Tornado will now face off at 2:00pm on Saturday with a title game berth on the line. The loser will play again at 4:00pm on Saturday and have a second chance to make it to Sunday. Click here for the bracket.
The Lions got off to a hot start on Friday. In the bottom of the opening inning, Mackenzie Hogan got things rolling when she singled and sent Kyna Cheney home. Then, after Kya Santiago got on base, Ellee Varner recorded an in-the-park home run, scoring three runs. Varner singled through the middle, sending Abigail Curry (pinch runner for Hogan) home. After trying and failing to tag Curry at home, the Braves attempted to snag Santiago, who was advancing to third at the same time. However, an errant pass sent the ball down the left field line, allowing Santiago to score and Varner to record the four bagger off the error. All of this resulted in a 4-0 lead for the Lions after the opening inning.
The Braves got on the board in the top of the fourth when they scored one run. A double by Jaryn Gibson in the bottom of the sixth extended Emmanuel's lead to the largest of the game, 6-1, when Gabby Buffington and Lily Jordan both scored.
The Braves mustered two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to catch the Lions, who would ultimately win by three, 6-3.
Kaitlyn Pickens got the win on the mound. The starter went three and two thirds innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four. Maddie Edwards recorded her second consecutive save, entering in the fourth inning and allowing just three hits and one earned run.
Ellee Varner led the offensive effort, going 2 for 3 at the plate. The Lions scattered 10 hits in total, while the Braves had 8.
Emmanuel stays in the winners bracket with the win and will face the only other undefeated team, King University, at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 30.
