Softball Splits Doubleheader with Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, NC – The Emmanuel softball team continued their conference play against Belmont Abbey, after sweeping Chowan University on March 18, 2023. The Lions split in the doubleheader against the Crusaders, winning the first game 3-2 then losing the second game 5-3. This moves Emmanuel's overall record to 15-13 and 4-2 in conference play.
 
Game 1
 
Emmanuel College defeated Belmont Abbey College 3-2 on Tuesday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at one with the Lions batting in the top of the fifth when Alyssa Adams singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
 
The pitching was strong on both sides. Madison Edwards struck out ten, while Alannah Browne sat down four.
 
Emmanuel College opened up scoring in the first inning, when an error scored one run for the Lions.
 
Belmont Abbey College knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the second inning, when Mackenzie Allison hit a solo homer.
 
Edwards was the winning pitcher for Emmanuel College. Edwardsd surrendered two runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out ten.
 
Browne took the loss for Belmont Abbey College. The pitcher surrendered three runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking one.
 
Emmanuel had nine hits in the game. Hogan, Adams, and Varner all collected multiple hits for the Lions.  Hogan went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Emmanuel College in hits.
 
Game 2
 
 
Belmont Abbey College knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the third inning. Belmont Abbey College scored two runs when Sydney Pon homered.
 
Belmont Abbey College pulled away for good with one run in the fourth inning. In the fourth, Mackenzie Allison hit a solo homer.
 
Adison Yoder was the winning pitcher for Belmont Abbey College. The ace lasted six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one. Alannah Browne threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
 
Kaitlyn Pickens took the loss for Emmanuel College. The righty surrendered four runs on seven hits over four innings, striking out two and walking zero.
 
Belmont Abbey College hit two home runs on the day. Pon had a long ball in the third inning. Allison went for the long ball in the fourth inning.
 
Mackensie Hogan went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lions in hits. Emmanuel College was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Gabby Buffington had the most chances in the field with four.
 
Belmont Abbey College tallied ten hits in the game. Mele, Yoder, Presley, and Allison all managed multiple hits for Belmont Abbey College. Mele led Belmont Abbey College with three hits in four at bats.
 
Next up, Emmanuel softball will face Mount Olive University on Friday, March 24 at home.
