MURFREESBORO, NC - The Emmanuel baseball team played a road series at Chowan on Saturday and Sunday. After sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, the Lions fell in the final game on Sunday. The 2-1 series win moves Emmanuel's record to 23-18 overall and 12-11 in conference play.
Game one:
After Chowan scored in the third inning, Kyle LaCross tied it up in the fourth when he drove Johnathan Manibusan home. Manibusan had three RBIs of his own in the fifth inning, when his double to left field sent three Lions across home plate. However, it was the seventh inning that was the game winner for the Lions. Emmanuel scored seven runs in the frame, with Ryan Muniz, Zachary Bergstrom, and Cody Minnis all recording RBIs. Chowan got to five in the bottom of the seventh, but two more runs for the Lions in the ninth secured the win, 13-5.
Matthew Dickey got the win on the mound for the Lions, going 5.1 innings and recording seven strikeouts. Barrett Barkley, Clifford Brown, Miles Dodds, Hunter Parks, and Tyler Mayfield all saw the mound en route to the Emmanuel win.
Game two:
Brody Campbell got the Lions started in the first inning when he sent Cody Minnis home. Minnis followed with an RBI in the top of the second, while Thomas Collins scored in the top of the third. Chowan scored in the bottom of the fourth, but a big sixth inning for the Lions would put them up by five when they scored four runs, making the score 6-1. Both teams scored once more, but Chowan couldn't muster a comeback as Emmanuel went on to win, 7-2.
Ethan Pooler got the win on the mound, going 5 innings and allowing just three hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts. Clifford Brown pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Game three:
Chowan built a big lead early on in Sunday's game, going up 8-1 after four innings. But the Lions clawed their way back in it with four runs in the fifth, a run in the seventh, and three in the eighth. Nick Dietsch's RBI in the top of the eighth tied the game, 8-8. However, a run for Chowan in the bottom of the eighth was the final score of the game, giving the Hawks the 9-8 victory.
Simon Boggie started the game on the mound, but it was Hunter Parks who took the loss for allowing the game winning run in the eighth inning. Ryan Smith, Barrett Barkley, and Clifford Brown all saw action on the mound. Boggie recorded five strikeouts, while Barkley had four.
Next up, Emmanuel will play a mid week, out of conference road game at Mars Hill on Tuesday, April 18 at 2:00pm.
