DUE WEST, SC - After Friday's game was canceled due to weather, the Emmanuel baseball team took on the Erskine Flying Fleet on Saturday. The Lions split the doubleheader, falling 4-7 before winning 3-2. This moves Emmanuel's record to 25-23 overall and 13-15 in league play.
Game one:
A single from Johnathon Manibusan in the first sent Thomas Collins home, giving Emmanuel an early 1-0 lead. However, the Fleet scored three runs in the bottom of the opener, taking a lead they would hold over the next three innings. In the top of the fourth, Chan Haulk, Brody Campbell, and Nick Dietsch all recorded RBIs. The three run inning sent Emmanuel up by one, 4-3. However, the Fleet put up four more runs in the fifth and sixth, while the Lions couldn't muster a response. This led to a 4-7 loss for Emmanuel.
Colby Fields started on the mound for Emmanuel, going 2 and two thirds innings. He gave up three runs while striking out two and walking one. Dosie Drakeford entered in the third, and he was the Lion eventually credited with the loss after also allowing three runs. Ethan Pooler threw three innings, striking out five while allowing just one hit and one run. Hunter Parks finished the game for the Lions with three strikeouts in the eighth inning.
Nick Dietsch and Braeden Eavenson both had two hits on offense.
Game two:
Solid pitching is what got it done for the Lions in game two. Emmanuel allowed just six hits and only two runs. Erskine scored in the first and fifth inning, but it was the third inning that made the difference for the Lions. A Thomas Collins three run homer sent Dobbs Bowden and Kyle LaCross around the bases. The big swing for Collins gave Emmanuel three runs and left the rest to the pitching staff, who would smoothly take care of business.
Simon Boggie got the start on the mound and went three innings. He gave up one run while striking out three. Barrett Barkley got credited the win for the Lions, pitching the fourth inning and striking out two while allowing one run. Clifford Brown went two and a third innings in relief, striking out four and allowing zero runs. Tyler Mayfield entered to close in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out one and allowed no runs to get credited with the save.
This concludes the 2023 regular season for Emmanuel baseball. Next up, the Lions will face Belmont Abbey in round one of the Conference Carolinas Championship on Wednesday, May 3 at 1:00pm.
