Lions Fall in Penalty Kicks to Mount Olive

Box Score Franklin Springs, GA – The Emmanuel Men's Soccer team hosted the University of Mount Olive Trojans tonight in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Championship. Tomas Pollacchi shined for the Lions, scoring three times, but the Trojans would tie things up in the 2nd half and force the game to penalty kicks. Mount Olive would make four penalty kicks to take the win.

In the first half of play, the Lions got things started early. Pollacchi found the net at 18:08 assisted by Emiliano Mesa Eboli to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. In the first half, the Lions outshot the Trojans 6-3, with one shot on goal. Emmanuel led Mount Olive 1-0 at the break. 

After half, Pollacchi scored his second goal of the night at the 46:47 mark to make it 2-0, Lions. The Trojans responded with a goal at 56:17 to cut the Lions lead in half, 2-1. With just 11 minutes left to play, the Trojans tied things up at 2-2.  At 81:39, Pollacchi hit the hat trick, scoring for the third time tonight, assisted by Matthew Fitzer to make it 3-2, Lions. The Trojans responded quickly, making it 3-3 at 85:29. In the second half, the Lions outshot the Trojans 12-7, with each team having 5 shots on goal.

In the first overtime period, the Lions outshot the Trojans 4-0, with 2 shots on goal but the score remained knotted at 3-3. 

The second overtime period was a defensive battle, with neither team getting a shot across which moved the game into penalty kicks. Both teams made their first two penalty kicks, but the Trojan goalkeeper would save shots by Pau Nel-Lo Recasens and Martin Cruz to earn the win and move onto face Francis Marion on Sunday at 4:30PM in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Championship.
