Franklin Springs, Ga – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team hosted the University of Mount Olive Trojans this afternoon in Conference Carolinas play. The two teams started out slowly offensively, but the Lions started clicking in the 2
nd quarter and controlled the pace of the game the rest of the way earning a 60-43 victory. This game was a special one for Head Coach,
Mike Bona as it was win number 800 on his career, with all 800 coming at Emmanuel.
The Lions took an early 8-4 lead in the first quarter behind made buckets by
Naomi Roberts and
Abby Crawford. The Trojans would respond to get within a point of the lead, 8-7 but a made three by
Emma Leonard with 39 seconds to play in the quarter gave the Lions a 10-7 lead after the first. The Lions were 4-17 from the field in the quarter and a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line.
The Lions started clicking offensively in the second quarter. A three by Crawford and layup by
Maddie Futch quickly pushed the Lions lead to 8, 15-7 early in the quarter. The Lions shot 57% from the field in the quarter, connecting on 2-3 from three-point range. The Lions would lead by as much as 12 points in the quarter and held a 27-17 lead at the half.
In the third, the Lions continued to control the pace of the game with quick passes and rebounding. Emmanuel ended the night with 32 points in the paint off of several second chance shots. In the third quarter, the Lions were 40% from the field and outscored the Trojans, 14-11. At the end of the third, the Lions led Mount Olive by 13, 41-28.
In the final quarter,
Naomi Roberts started out strong with six early points to put the Lions up 16 with 4:51 to go. Late in the quarter, Roberts would come in clutch at the free throw line to put the Lions up 19 with 1:18 to play. The Lions would close things out strong, defeating the Trojans by 17, 60-43. With the win, the Lions now sit at 4-7 on the season, 3-3 in conference play.
Naomi Roberts led the Lions with 21 points and 5 rebounds on the afternoon.
Maddie Futch was the only other Lion in double figures scoring with 11 points and 6 boards on the night.
Addie Penick led the Lions with 7 assists, while
Ade'Jah James grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with her 9 points.
