Lions Down Tusculum in Five Sets!

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball team continued play today in the UAH Invitational with a game against Tusculum University. The two teams were evenly matched, with Tusculum taking the first set, 26-24. The Lions responded to take the next two sets, 25-17, 25-19. Tusculum answered to take the fourth set, 27-25
 
 
In the first set, the Lions took an early 4-1 lead. Tusculum would respond with a 4-0 run to take the lead 5-4. The two teams would trade points throughout the set, with the Lions leading by as much as 7 on two occasions. The Pioneers would fight back to tie things at 21, taking their first lead since 5-4, 22-21. The two teams would go point for point, but Tusculum would finish strong, scoring the final two points of the set to take it, 26-24. 
 
The Pioneers would take an early 5-2 lead in the second set, but the Lions would answer back with a 6-0 run to take a 7-5 lead.  The Lions held onto the lead throughout the rest of the set, leading by as much as 7 points. The Pioneers would get within one point of the lead, 16-15 but a 4-0 run by the Lions would put some space between the teams, giving the Lions a 20-15 lead. The Lions held onto win the set, 25-17. 
 
The Pioneers started out strong in the third set, taking an early 6-2 lead. The Lions responded to tie things at 14-14 on a block by Alaina Emminger and Cailin Pritchard. The Lions went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. The Lions would score the final three points of the set to take it 25-19.
 
The fourth set started out with several ties and lead changes early. Tusculum would go on a 7-0 run to pull away 10-6. The Pioneers would hold onto the lead until late in the set when Ellie Jackson and Alaina Emminger recorded three straight kills to tie things up at 22.  The two teams would trade points until the end, when the Pioneers closed out the match scoring the final two points to take the set, 27-25. 
 
The fifth set was all Emmanuel. The Lions led from the start, collecting 9 kills to pull away and take the set, 15-8. 
 
Overall, the Lions had 64 kills on the day, with Ellie Jackson leading the way with a career high, 19 kills. Emily Hanson (12), Jocelyn Martin (11) and Alaina Emminger (!0) all collected double digit kills on the day. 
 
The Lions had 7 blocks in the game, with sophomore Cailin Pritchard leading the way with 5. The Lions were strong at the service line, with 12 aces on the day, 4 of them coming from Layla Bland
 
Next up, the Lions will face tournament host, University of Alabama-Huntsville to close out the weekend of play at 5:45PM.
