FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel Men's Basketball team rang in the New Year with a regional matchup against USC Aiken this afternoon. The Lions jumped out to an early lead, taking a 37-32 lead into the break. The Lions pushed their lead to double digits early in the 2
nd half and withstood a run by the Pacers to earn the 81-69 victory. With the win, the Lions move to 6-8 on the season.
The Lions jumped out to an early 14-2 lead with
Devin Story starting a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.
Massimo Moretti and
Ezra McKee got into the action, pushing the Lions lead to 22-10 with 12:13 to play in the half. The Pacers cut the Lions lead to three points with 7:15 to play in the half, but the Lions answered, closing out the half strong from three-point range, with Moretti and
Isaac Jones connecting to give the Lions a 37-32 lead heading into the break. In the first half, the Lions shot 14-33 from the field, connecting on 9-19 from three-point range.
The Lions pushed their lead to double digits early in the second half with a quick six points from Jones and a tip-in from McKee to put Emmanuel up 45-35 with 15:46 to play. The Lions continued to stay hot from three-point range with jumpers from
Micah Roebuck and
Sam Thacker extending the Lions lead to 14, 51-37. The Pacers responded with a run to cut the Lions lead to seven with 11:33 to play, but Emmanuel answered with an 8-0 run to go up 59-45 with 10:08 to play. The Pacers would get within five points late in the game, but the Lions would close out the game strong with buckets by Thacker and
Rett VanDeMark. A dunk from
Ezra McKee with 8 seconds to play put the exclamation mark on the Lions 81-69 victory. In the second half, the Lions shot 52% from the field and 7-17 from three-point range.
Four Lions ended the afternoon in double figures with
Ezra McKee and
Sam Thacker leading the way with 17 points each. McKee led the team with 7 rebounds and 3 steals, while Thacker added 6 assists.
Devin Story and
Massimo Moretti each added 14 points, with Story leading the team in assists with 7. Moretti went 4-7 from three-point range on the afternoon.
Next up, the Lions will travel to Mount Olive, NC to face the University of Mount Olive on Saturday at 4PM.
