NEWBERRY, SC – The Emmanuel Baseball team traveled to Newberry, SC this afternoon to face the Newberry College Wolves in regional action. The Wolves got off to a fast start offensively and closed out the game strong to earn a 16-6 victory. With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-2 on the early season.
The Wolves got on the board first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.
Newberry extended their lead in the bottom of the second with four runs on two hits and one error to make it 5-0.
After a scoreless third, the Wolves added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored three runs on three hits to go up 8-0.
The Lions got on the board in the top of the fifth.
Dee Oliver started things off with a single up the middle.
Ryan Muniz walked to advance Oliver to 2
nd. The runners both advanced on a wild pitch and
Jesus Cruz followed that up with a single to score Oliver and make the score 8-1, Wolves.
Brock Wollin hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Muniz and cut the Wolves lead to 8-2.
Cameron Hancock kept things going with a 2-run shot to make it 8-4. In the bottom half of the inning, the Wolves answered back with five runs on four hits to make it 13-4.
After a scoreless sixth inning for the Lions, the Wolves tacked on one run on an error to make it 14-4.
In the top of the seventh,
Kyle Belich led things off with a single to left field. Oliver reached on an error that advanced Belich to 3
rd base and Muniz brought both runners home with a single up the middle to make it 14-6.
The Wolves added two runs on two hits in the bottom of the 8
th to make the final score 16-6.
At the plate,
Jesus Cruz led the way going 2-4.
Dee Oliver scored 2 of the Lions 6 runs.
On the mound,
Noah Olson got the nod going 1.0 innings and giving up 4 runs on 2 hits.
Lucas Meehan relieved him to pitch 2.0 innings. He gave up 1 run on two hits and struck out two batters.
Gavin Richardson came in next to face 4 batters. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits.
Kody Collins relieved him and threw 1.0 inning. He gave up 2 runs on 1 hit.
Zach Evans was up next, going 1.0 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and struck out a batter.
Chase Lupton faced one batter and gave up one run.
Jamin Smith came in to pitch 2.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit. He struck out two batters and walked one.
Will Sherman closed out the game for the Lions, facing 3 batters. He gave up one hit and struck out one batter.
