Salisbury, NC – The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball team traveled to Salisbury, NC tonight to take on Catawba College in non-conference play. The Indians jumped out to an early lead, taking set one, 25-18. Catawba continued their momentum into the second set, downing the Lions 25-12 and finished the night with a competitive set three, with the Indians edging out Emmanuel, 25-19. With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-8 on the season.
In the first set, the Indians jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Kills by
Andrew Michael and
Aidan Feeney cut the Indians lead to 3-2, but Catawba responded well to go up 9-4. Kills by Feeney and
Carlos Guerrero cut the Indians lead to 12-10 midway through the set. The Lions kept things close until a 4-1 run by the Indians gave Catawba a 23-17 lead. The Indians closed out the set strong to win, 25-18.
The Indians jumped out to an early lead in set two, but the Lions responded well behind kills by Feeney,
Greg Bodus, and
Thijs Van der Wal to tie things at 6-6. The Indians answered back with a 9-1 run to make it 15-7, Catawba midway through the set. The Indians closed out the set strong to win it, 25-12.
In the third set, the Lions rebounded well. The Indians jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, but the Lions responded with kills by
Ed-Verian Basson and Van der Wal to tie things at 9. The Lions grabbed their first lead of the set on an attack error by the Indians to make it 11-10, and back-to-back kills by Feeney pushed the Lions lead to three, 15-12. The Indians answered to tie things at 16, but an attack error by Catawba put the Lions back up 17-16. A 4-1 run by Catawba put the Indians back up on top, 20-18 and they closed out the set strong to earn a 25-19 win in set three, and a 3-0 win.
Overall, the Lions had 28 kills, 39 digs, and 8 blocks.
Aidan Feeney led the way with a double-double, 12 kills and 10 digs on the night.
Thijs Van der Wall led the team in digs with 11, while adding 6 kills.
Ed-Verian Basson had 3 blocks on the night.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Belmont, NC to face Belmont Abbey at 2PM for their first conference matchup of the season.
