Franklin Springs, GA – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team hosted Barton College this afternoon in conference play. The Lions got off to a hot start, leading 39-25 at the half. The Bulldogs responded well in the 2
nd half, but the Lions came away with a ten-point victory, 68-58! With the win, the Lions improve to 9-13 overall and 8-7 in conference action.
The Lions jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage in the 1
st quarter with big plays by
Abby Crawford and
Naomi Roberts. The Lions continued on an 8-0 run led by Crawford and
Ade'Jah James to make it 18-6, Lions with 2:07 to play in the 1
st. In the first, the Lions were 9-20 from the field (40%) and led 18-11 after the first.
In the second quarter,
Lizzie Teasley started out strong with two baskets to push the Lions lead to 12 points, 23-11. A lay-up by
Naomi Roberts with 6:10 to play in the quarter gave the Lions a 15-point lead, 28-13. Several Lions got into the action in the 2
nd quarter, including freshman,
Natalee Goff and senior, Mackenzie Caldwell. The Lions shot 62% from the field in the quarter (8-13) and connected on 2-4 from three-point range. At the half, the Lions led by 14, 39-25.
The Bulldogs started off the third quarter strong to cut the Lions lead down to 9 points, 39-30. The Lions answered back with a jumper by
Addie Penick and a layup by James to extend the lead back up to 13 with 7:39 to play in the 3
rd. The Lions controlled the pace of the quarter and a layup by Crawford with 1:54 to play in the 3
rd gave the Lions their biggest lead of the afternoon, 52-35. After three, the Lions led 52-37.
In the final quarter of play, the Bulldogs mounted a comeback, shooting 8-19 from the field and connecting on 3-7 from downtown. Barton outscored the Lions 21-16 in the quarter, cutting the Lions lead to 6 points with 39 seconds to play, but the Lions closed out the game with two made free throws by Crawford and a layup by James to earn a 68-58 win.
Three Lions ended the day in double-figures scoring.
Abby Crawford led the team with 17 points, while
Ade'Jah James contributed 14.
Naomi Roberts added 10 on the afternoon.
Maddie Futch grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the team, while
Addie Penick had 7 assists.
