Lions Fall to Mount Olive 3-0

Box Score Franklin Springs, GA – The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball team hosted the University of Mount Olive this afternoon in conference play. The Lions battled strong behind 12 kills by Lucas Nieves but the Trojans came away with a 3-0 victory, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-16 on the season, 0-7 in conference play.

In the first set, the Trojans jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but the Lions responded well by forcing consecutive errors and a kill by Lucas Nieves to tie things at 5. The Trojans answered back with a 7-0 run to go up 12-5. Kills by Nieves and Aidan Feeney would make it 16-10, Mount Olive midway through the set. Late in the set, kills by Feeney and Carlos Guerrero, along with an ace by Thijs Van der Wal would cut the Trojans lead to 20-16 but Mount Olive would close the set out strong to earn a 25-18 win.

The Trojans continued their momentum into the 2nd set.  The two teams traded points early, with key plays by Feeney and Van der Wal. The Trojans pulled away with a 6-0 run to go up 11-4 but the Lions answered with kills by Nieves and Feeney to make it 16-8. The Trojans finished out the set strong to earn a 25-16 win. 

In the third set, the two teams traded points and the lead with Nieves collecting 5 kills early. The Trojans pulled away with a 4-0 run to go up 11-7, but the Lions cut the lead to 14-13 midway through the set. A 6-0 run for Mount Olive pushed their lead to 20-13 then the Trojans closed out the set on a 5-4 run to earn a 25-17 win and take the game 3-0.

Overall, the Lions had 25 kills, 21 assists, 2 aces, 4 blocks and 23 digs. 

Lucas Nieves led the way with 12 kills, with Aidan Feeney adding 7. Oliwer Wrobel had 20 assists on the afternoon, with Thijs Van der Wal and Nieves adding a service ace. Carlos Guerrero led the team in blocks with 1.5, with Wrobel, Andrew Michael and Elek Cumming grabbing 1.0 a piece. Josh Staelher, Wrobel, Feeney and Nieves all had 5 digs on the afternoon.

The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Catawba College at 7PM in their 2nd annual "You Matter" game to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention.
