LIons Fall to Barton 3-0

Wilson, NC– The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball team continued their road trip to Wilson, NC today to take on Barton College in conference action. The Lions battled from start to finish, but the Bulldogs came away with a 3-0 win (25-20, 27-25, 25-17). With the loss, the Lions fall to 4-21 on the season, 2-10 in conference action. 

The two teams traded points to start off the 1st set, but the Bulldogs used a 5-1 run to jump ahead 8-4. The Lions responded well with a service ace by Bryan Povea and a kill by Carlos Guerrero which cut the Bulldogs lead to 9-7. The Bulldogs jumped back out ahead 13-9 midway through the set, but kills by Thijs Van der Wal, Aidan Feeney, and Povea, along with a service ace from Lucas Nieves brought the Lions within two points of the lead, 15-13. Barton would jump back out ahead, 23-18 late and hold onto win the set, 25-20. 

In the second set, the Lions jumped out to a 3-2 lead behind two service aces from Oliwer Wrobel. The two teams traded points and the lead until the Bulldogs used a scoring run to take a 14-10 lead.  A kill by Van der Wal and an ace by Nieves cut the Bulldogs lead to 16-15 and a kill by. Povea and two attack errors by Barton would give the Lions a 18-17 lead. The two teams traded points and the lead, with Barton needing extra points to earn a 27-25 set two win. 

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set three. Kills by Feeney, Van der Wal and Elek Cumming would make it 12-8, but the Bulldogs would answer with a 4-1 run to pull ahead 16-9.  Late in the set, the Bulldogs led 22-15 and Barton closed out the set strong to earn the set three win, 25-17 and the game 3-0.
 
Overall, the Lions had 31 kills, 5 aces, 3 blocks, 31 assists and 40 digs. 

Aidan Feeney led the Lions with 10 kills, with Thijs Van der Wal adding 7. Lucas Nieves and Oliwer Wrobel each had 2 aces on the afternoon, with Carlos Guerrero leading the Lions with 2 blocks. Wrobel had 29 assists to lead the team, with Josh Staehler adding 11 digs. 

Next, the Lions will host Belmont Abbey on April 5th at 2PM in the Shaw Athletic Center.
