DUNCAN, SC- The Emmanuel Softball team opened up Conference Championship play this afternoon with a game against the King University Tornado. The Lions came into the contest as the #10 seed, with King sitting at #7. The Tornado took the early 2-0 lead, but the Lions rallied late to earn a 3-2 victory. With the win, the Lions moved on to play #2 seeded, UNC Pembroke.
The Tornado got on the board early with a run on a hit in the bottom of the 1
st to take a 1-0 lead.
King added to their lead in the bottom of the 4
th with a run on 4 hits to make it 2-0, Tornado.
The Lions rallied in the top of the 6
th inning.
Abby Rocco got things started with a single down the left field line, advancing to 2
nd on a throwing error.
Jaryn Gibson reached on a throwing error by the 3
rd baseman to score Rocco, making it 2-1, King.
Arlie Gooden came in as a pinch runner for Gibson.
Ciara Passmore reached on a throwing error, advancing to 3
rd and scoring Gooden to tie the game at 2-2. Passmore scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.
The Lions closed out the game strong, allowing just 2 hits in the final two innings to take game one, 3-2.
At the plate,
Ciara Passmore and
Abby Rocco were both 1-3 with a run scored.
In the circle,
Carly Forrester started things off throwing 5.0 innings. She gave up 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out a batter.
Cassidy Jenkins closed out the game, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out 3 batters, giving up just a hit.
The Lions moved on to face #2 seed, UNC Pembroke at 5PM.
