Gastonia, NC – The Emmanuel Baseball team continued play in the Conference Carolinas Championship this afternoon with a matchup against nationally ranked, #7 Young Harris College in the semifinals. Coming into today, the two teams were the only unbeaten teams left in the tournament. The Mountain Lions took the lead in the 1
st inning and scored early and often after that to earn the 21-1 victory. With the loss, the Lions fall to 29-25 on the season.
The Mountain Lions took the lead in the first with a run on 2 hits to make it 1-0.
The Lions threatened in the bottom of the 2
nd, loading the bases, but a groundout would end the at-bat with no runs coming across.
The Mountain Lions responded in the top of the 3
rd with 5 runs on 5 hits to make it 6-0.
Young Harris added to their lead in the top of the 4
th with 5 runs on 4 hits to make it 11-0. The Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Nick Madrigal reached on a throwing error and
Dobbs Bowden doubled to right center to score him, cutting the Mountain Lion lead to 11-1.
Young Harris stayed strong offensively, with 2 runs on 3 hits and an error in the top of the 5
th to push their lead to 13-1.
The Mountain Lions opened the game up in the top of the 6
th with 8 runs on 6 hits to take a 21-1 lead. The Lions threatened in the bottom half of the inning with hits by
Hayden Beall and Madrigal, but the inning ended with a ground out, leaving 2 runners on base.
In the top of the 7
th, the Mountain Lions added 4 runs on 2 hits and an error to make the final score 25-1.
At the plate,
Hayden Beall went 2-3.
On the mound,
Will Sherman earned the start. He threw 2.0 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits.
Hunter Parks came in next, throwing 1.1 innings. He gave up 5 runs on 4 hits.
Barrett Barkley relieved him to toss an inning, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits.
Jamin Smith was next on the mound, giving up 5 runs on 3 hits.
Zakk Gibbons relieved him to face 4 batters, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits.
Jake Renuart closed out the game for the Lions, throwing 1.2 innings and giving up 4 runs on 3 hits.
Next up, the Lions will face the winner of Barton/Belmont Abbey tomorrow afternoon at 4PM for a spot in the Conference Championship game!
