ROME, GA – The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball team traveled to Rome, GA tonight to take on the Shorter University Hawks in conference action. The match was competitive from the start, but the Lions came away with the sweep, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24. With the win, Emmanuel improves to 4-3 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.
The two teams traded points and the lead early in the first set. The Hawks pulled ahead by two, 9-7 but a 5-0 run by the Lions including a kill by
Ellie Jackson and a service ace by
Isabel Miller gave the Lions a 12-9 advantage. Emmanuel led the rest of the way, but Shorter kept things close cutting the Lions lead to one point late.
Ellie Jackson closed out the set strong with consecutive kills to give the Lions a 25-22 win in the first.
The second set saw the Hawks jump out to an early 5-1 lead. The Lions responded well, with kills by Jackson,
Skye Graham, and
Natalie Wilson knotting the set at 11-11. After several ties and lead changes, the Lions took the lead on a few caused errors by the Hawks, 18-17 and kills by
Cailin Pritchard and Graham pushed the lead to 21-18. Three consecutive errors by Shorter closed out the set, 25-19 Emmanuel.
The errors continued for Shorter in the third set, giving the Lions an early 6-3 lead. The Hawks tied the set at 8-8 and continued on an 8-1 run to take a 18-12 lead. The Lions rallied with a 7-1 run of their own, made up of kills by
Marusa Pesut and errors by the Hawks to make it 19-19. The Hawks scored the next three points to go up, 22-19 but the Lions responded with kills by Jackson and aces by Pesut to go up 24-22. The Hawks tied things up at 24, but the Lions closed out the set strong with a kill and an ace by Jackson to give Emmanuel the 26-24 set three win and the sweep, 3-0.
Overall, the Lions had 33 kills. 5 aces, 6 blocks, 28 assists, and 58 digs.
Ellie Jackson led the way with 14 kills, 10 digs and 3 blocks.
Isabel Miller led the team in aces with 2, while
Marusa Pesut had 22 assists.
Asia Queen led the way with digs with 15.
Next up, the Lions will host a doubleheader at home against Anderson University (12PM) and Ferrum University (2:30PM).
