Lions Fall to Mount Olive 72-64

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Mount Olive, NC today to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans in conference action. The Trojans took an early lead, taking a 42-33 lead into the half. The Lions rallied late to pull within three points of the lead, but the Trojans closed the game strong to take the 72-64 win. With the loss, the Lions fall to 9-4 on the season, 4-3 in conference play.

The two teams traded points early in the first quarter, with Naomi Roberts and Natalee Goff leading the way offensively for the Lions. The Trojans pulled away late to take a 22-16 lead with 2:22 to play in the quarter and held onto the lead to end the first up 24-18. In the first, the Lions shot 7-12 from the field, with Naomi Roberts contributing 12 points. 

The Trojans went up by double digits early in the second quarter, pushing their lead to 15 points with 6:52 to play until halftime. The Lions responded well, with Roberts, Kate Jackson and Julie Azeltine chipping away at Mount Olive's lead to head into halftime down, 42-33. In the quarter the Lions shot 42% from the field, connecting on 5-7 from the foul line. 

Following the break, a quick three-pointer from Lizzie Teasley cut the Trojans lead to six early.  The Lions continued to rally, getting within five points of the lead with 6:52 to go in the third. The Trojans answered back to push their lead back up to 11 with 4:11 to play in the quarter, but Roberts and Teasley closed the quarter out strong at the foul line to make it 59-52, Trojans after three. 

The two teams continued to trade points to start the fourth quarter. Back-to-back buckets from Roberts made it 64-61, Trojans midway through the quarter but the Trojans answered to close out the game 4-4 from the foul line to earn the 72-64 win. 

Naomi Roberts led all scorers with 34 points on the afternoon. She added 4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Natalee Goff, Kate Jackson, and Lizzie Teasley each added 9 points, with Goff leading the Lions in rebounds with 9. Jackson, Teasley, and Hannah Harris each contributed 4 assists.

Next up, the Lions will travel to Central, SC to face Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 5PM.
