Derrick Herbert

Coach Derrick has five years of collegiate coaching experience and has been at Emmanuel for three seasons. This past season (2020-21) he helped lead the Lions to a historical season. A season that he helped guide them to a 17-7 overall record (11-2 conference record), their second regular season Conference title in the last 3 years, and a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. They also started the year by defeating Stetson University, for the first win against a Division I opponent in program history. He helped the Lions finish the year ranked as the #22 ranked team in the nation. Coach Derrick is also the Head Coach of the JV Men’s Basketball team which has only lost 3 games in the past two seasons. He led them to the 2019-20 Conference Carolinas JV Tournament Championship. His teams have averaged over 100 points per game in the last two seasons.

In 2018-19, Coach Derrick’s first season at Emmanuel, he helped them win their first Conference Carolinas Regular-Season title. The Lions then went on to win the Conference Carolinas Tournament to earn a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Lions finished a historical year with a record of 25-10 in their first full year being a member of NCAA Division II.

Coach Derrick comes to us from Augusta University, where he was there from 2016-18 as a Student Assistant for Dip Metress. He was a part of a lot of success at Augusta. In his first season, they finished the 2016-17 season with a record of 24-8 while winning the Peach Belt regular-season championship and earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. During his second season with Augusta, they finished the year with another winning record of 16-13. His primary roles while there was player development, assisting with scouts, and recruiting.

Coach Derrick went to Norcross High School, where he was the starting point guard on their 2011 state championship team. He was also named All-County during his senior campaign in 2012. He finished his playing career at Western Texas College then came back home to play at Clark Atlanta University.

He is a graduate of Western Texas College (AA Degree) and Augusta University with a B.S. in Business Management.

Coach Derrick was born in Lexington Park, MD, before moving to Atlanta, GA. He is married to Nailah Herbert and they reside in Franklin Springs, GA.
