BANNER ELK, NC - The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer Team was beating 4-0 by the Lees-McRae Bobcats Friday night in tough conditions in the mountainous North Carolina region. The game initially scheduled for Saturday was moved to Friday because of the incoming cold front producing snow in North Carolina early Saturday morning. The Lions battled the unfamiliar conditions and the opponent, but were undone by a well-disciplined Lees-McRae unit. The first blow for the Lions came in the 10th minute when a spillage from a corner kick and some sloppy marking in the box allowed Cheyenne Warrick to drive the ball past EC keeper Marina Eisenhut. Just nine minutes later Rachael Nobbs' 15 yard rocket found the net, the Lion's a little slow in closing down the shot, now trailing 0-2.
Soon after the half, Emmanuel Goalkeeper Breanna Grizzle was injured in a play that saw her diving high left in an attempt to save a chip shot, her knee unfortunately giving out and the Lions going down 0-3. Marina Eisenhut played the remainder of the game in goal for the Lions, tallying 15 saves for the match. The final goal for Lees-McRae came after Mallory Overholt's daring run up the middle produced a goal from Kelsey Twigg on the left hand side. The Lions best chance to score came in the 84th minute when Sophomore Emaleigh Fouche was able to get in behind the Bobcat defence, the shot saved by keeper Jessica Bunce.
The Lions will host Palm Beach Atlantic next Saturday evening for Senior Night, the match set to kick of at 6pm at the Stevens Athletic Field.
