DAHLONEGA, GA - The women's basketball team faced No. 6 North Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Despite a final score of 74-56, the result was not at all indicative of the battle that occurred. The Lions led at the half and only trailed by three after the third quarter, but a hot streak in the final 10 minutes led to the Nighthawks winning by 18 points. The loss moves Emmanuel's record to 0-2.
The Lions raced to an early six point lead after five minutes of play, 12-6. The Nighthawks cut the lead in half by the end of the quarter, but the Lions still held a three point advantage, 18-15. After a closely fought second quarter, the score was tied at 33 with less than 30 seconds to go when Emmanuel got the ball. Junior Jazmin Allen was the one who took the final shot of the half, pulling up for a long three-point attempt at the buzzer. Allen knocked down the beautiful shot from deep, giving the Lions a three point lead after 20 minutes, 36-33.
The close contest continued into the second half, until a push from the Nighthawks got them up by as much as seven. But a couple late baskets by the Lions got them back within a possession by the end of the third quarter, 52-49. Emmanuel's hopes of an upset victory faded in the final 10 minutes as North Georgia caught fire, out scoring the Lions 22-7 in the final quarter. Eventually the Nighthawks won by 18 points, 74-56.
Sydney Wyatt had a breakout performance in her second start as a Lion, recording 21 points and a pair of rebounds. Jazmin Allen notched back-to-back double-doubles on the weekend with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
