FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The women's basketball team began conference play on Saturday with a game against Francis Marion. The Lions beat the Patriots, 60-54, moving their record to 1-3 (1-0 CC).
Junior Jazmin Allen started off the night with a layup for the Lions. She then added four more points before sophomore Sydney Wyatt completed a three-point play by sinking a free throw. The hot streak gave the Lions a quick 9-0 lead. The Patriots cut the deficit by the end of the first quarter but the Lions still led by three, 14-11. Emmanuel got off to another good start in the second quarter, but a late push by the Patriots got them within a possession by halftime as the Lions led, 23-21.
FMU scored the first five points of quarter three, giving them their first lead of the evening, 26-23. With ten minutes to go the score was all square, 35-35. Wyatt alone put up 13 points in the final quarter, leading Emmanuel to a six point victory as FMU struggled to respond, 60-54. The Lions shot 60% as a team in the final ten minutes, putting up 25 points and sealing the victory via hot shooting.
Sydney Wyatt finished with a career high 19 points while adding 5 boards and 4 assists. Jazmin Allen put up 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Junior Reyonna Hopkins also recorded a career high with 10 points.
Next up, women's basketball will host UNC Pembroke in another conference matchup on Tuesday, November 23 at 5:00pm.
