WILSON, NC - The women's basketball team played Barton on Friday night. The Bulldogs edged the Lions by one, 57-56, moving Emmanuel's record to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Lions got off to a strong start, building a 15-7 lead early in the game. The hot start continued until the end of the first quarter when Emmanuel led by 10 points, 19-9. The Bulldogs battled back in the second quarter, eventually able to surpass the Lions with four minutes left, 22-21. The lead flip flopped a couple of times before the half, but a six point run for Barton gave them a three point lead after 20 minutes, 31-28.
Barton led 37-30 after a good start to the second half. However, 9 consecutive points for Emmanuel propelled them into the lead. With the score tied at 44, the Lions made back-to-back shots to lead by four at the end of the third quarter, 48-44. The seesaw of momentum swings continued in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs led 53-50 with just over two minutes remaining. Junior Jazmin Allen took it to the basket to get the score back within a point. Neither team could score before Barton got the ball with less than 30 seconds on the clock. The Lions had to intentionally foul and the Bulldogs made both free throws. With the score now 54-57, the Lions needed a three with 16 seconds on the clock. They were able to score two, but it wasn't enough as Barton took the hard fought game by a point, 57-56.
Jazmin Allen led the way for the Lions, putting up 18 points while recording a career high in rebounds with 15. Sophomore Sydney Wyatt followed with 14 points and 5 rebounds.
