YOUNG HARRIS, GA - Women's volleyball defeated the Young Harris Mountain Lions in four sets, 3-1, on Tuesday night. The victory moves Emmanuel's record to 2-6 overall.
The first set began with four consecutive points for the Lions as they captured the early momentum. Emmanuel continued to roll and increased their lead to seven points, 13-6. The Mountain Lions managed to piece together a late run and get within three points, but kills from sophomore Emily Hanson and senior Aleksandra Hamuda gave Emmanuel the set, 25-21.
Emmanuel led the second set 5-4 early on. However, eight straight for YHC quickly gave them a large advantage, 12-5. The Lions were unable to fight their way back in the set as Young Harris took it, 25-13.
The Lions rebounded in the third set as they scored the first three points. YHC stayed within reach throughout the early part of the set, but Emmanuel started to pull away around the halfway mark as they built a six point lead, 17-11. But the Mountain Lions didn't go down without a fight as they went on a 12-5 run to gain a one point lead, 23-22. However, a pair of errors by YHC was followed with a kill by freshman Jocyln Martin, giving Emmanuel the set, 25-23.
With Emmanuel barely leading in the middle of the fourth set, 11-10, the Lions went on a four point run that included an ace from senior Taylor Roberts. YHC was unable to recover as the Lions continued their momentum until senior Mia Cotton recorded back-to-back kills to give Emmanuel the set, 25-18, and the game, 3-1.
The Lions were led by Taylor Roberts, who finished with 10 kills in just 15 attempts as she notched a season high hitting percentage of .533. Additionally, Roberts recorded a career high 4 service aces. Mia Cotton followed with 9 kills and a hitting percentage of .294, while Aleksandra Hamuda finished with 8 kills and 2 blocks.
Next up, women's volleyball will begin conference play with a match at North Greenville University on Wednesday, September 22 at 7:00 PM.
