FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - Women's volleyball continued conference play in the first game of a double header on Saturday. The Lions shut out the Belmont Abbey Crusaders, winning 3-0. The victory moves Emmanuel's record to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in conference.
The Lions rolled to an early lead in the first set, 4-1. The momentum continued as they increased their advantage until the score was 13-7. The Crusaders took a timeout in hopes of changing the pace, but it wasn't effective as the Lions cruised to victory in the first set, 25-17.
The second set began in a fashion that mirrored the first as Emmanuel took the lead early, 6-2. This time around the Lions increased their dominating play until the score was 12-4. A large factor in the dominate stretch was freshman Jocelyn Martin, who recorded an extremely impressive 9 kills throughout the second set. The Crusaders rallied to get back within four points, 18-14, but a 7-2 run by the Lions finished the set with senior Hallie Richardson recording an ace to put it away, 25-16.
The Crusaders attempted to turn the tide as they took an early lead in the third set, 6-3. However, it wasn't to be as the Lions pieced together a six point run, fueled by errors from the Crusaders, a kill from senior Aleksandra Hamuda, and another ace from Richardson. The momentum continued to build for the Lions as Hamuda recorded four more kills and Gabrielle McGlamery tacked on an ace to make the score 16-10. The Crusaders managed to get back within three, but kills from sophomore Emily Hanson and senior Taylor Roberts led to Emmanuel once again dominating the set as they took it, 25-16, and swept the match, 3-0.
The Lions were led by Jocelyn Martin, who finished with a career high 12 kills, 2 blocks, a pair of digs, and a hitting percentage of .364. Aleksandra Hamuda followed with 11 kills, 7 digs, a block and an ace, along with a hitting percentage of .310.
Gabrielle McGlamery finished with 31 assists, an ace, and a kill.
Women's volleyball will continue their double header as they face Flagler College at 5pm.
