Lions Fall to Chargers in Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Women's volleyball is kicking off their season with a trip west as they participate in the 2021 University of Alabama in Huntsville Invitational. In the first match of the weekend, the Lions lost to UAH in three sets, 3-0.

UAH held a slim lead early in the first set, 8-7. However, six consecutive points for the chargers gave them a 7-point lead, 14-7. The Lions couldn't manage their way back into the set as the Chargers took it, 25-19.

The Lions fought a close battle for much of the second set as there were 4 lead changes and 11 times the score was tied. With the Chargers leading 18-17, UAH scored 6 consecutive points to gain a large advantage late in the set, 23-17. The Lions scored two more points but it wasn't enough as the Chargers took the set, 25-19.

The third set was an even closer exchange, with neither team leading by more than two points for the majority of the set. Side out after side out resulted in neither team being able to pull away. The largest lead of the set came when UAH took a three point advantage late, 23-20. However, a pair of errors from the Chargers and a kill by Taylor Roberts tied the set, 23-23. After a point for UAH, Mia Cotton once again tied the score with a kill of her own. An error from the Chargers gave Emmanuel a one point advantage, 25-24. However, three straight points for UAH gave them the set, 27-25, and closed out the game, 3-0.

The Lions were led by senior Aleksandra Hamuda, who recorded 11 kills and 7 digs. Senior Mia Cotton followed with 9 kills, 7 digs, and a block. Sophomore setter Gabrielle McGlamery recorded 25 assists and senior Victoria Alexander led the team in digs with 18.
