Women's Soccer Shuts Out Shorter in Season Opener

Lions take the victory, 2-0, in their first game of the season

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The women's soccer team played their first game of the season on Tuesday night. The Lions defeated the Shorter University Hawks at home, moving their record to 1-0.

In Emmanuel's second shot of the night (18:18), a pass from senior Moriah Logue set up a goal by junior Viki Lederer as she become the first Lion to score this season. The rest of the first half was predominately a defensive struggle, but each team did manage to take two shots a piece. However, neither found the net and each goalkeeper racked up one save.

The second half began with three consecutive shots for the Eagles. However, they failed to score as two were wide left and the third was snagged by Emmanuel's freshman goalkeeper, Julia Styrmisdottir. The momentum started to favor the Lions as they began controlling possession. And, in the 61st minute, a shot from senior Brianna Bishop found the goal, giving the Lions a two point advantage, 2-0. Despite not adding any additional goals, the Lions got 8 more shots off in the final half hour. Four of them were saved by the Eagles goalkeeper, Emily Lopez, while four were off target.

The Lions finished the match with a total of 15 shots taken, 6 of which were on goal. The Eagles finished with 6 total shots, 3 of which were saved by Styrmisdottir.

Bishop and Lederer each finished with one goal, while Moriah Logue ended the night with an assist.

Next up, women's soccer will begin conference play against Barton College on Saturday, September 11.
