FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The women's basketball team hosted the southern Wesleyan Warriors on Wednesday night. The Lions defeated the Warriors, 57-46, moving Emmanuel's record to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
The Lions got off to a dominate start both offensively and defensively, scoring 14 points while not allowing the Warriors to make a bucket from the field in the first quarter. SWU scored five points, but all of them came off free throws.
The Warriors bounced back in the second quarter, out scoring the Lions 11-8 as Emmanuel suffered a drought on offense. SWU was hot and cold, with the majority of their points coming from a hot stretch halfway through the quarter. After 20 minutes of play the teams entered the break with the Lions on top by 6 points, 22-16.
Emmanuel scored 15 points in the third quarter, with eight of them coming from senior Allison Smith. Number 12 recorded back-to-back threes in the effort, leading the Lions to a double-digit advantage with ten minutes to go, 37-27.
A handful of Lions contributed to the most productive quarter of the night on offense in the fourth. A perfect 2/2 from three combined with a 6 of 8 effort from the charity stripe, while the Lions went 6 of 13 from the field. This resulted in Emmanuel posting 20 points in the final quarter, versus 19 for SWU. The Lions maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, going on to win by 11 points, 57-46.
Allison Smith led the scoring effort for the Lions, finishing with a career-high 17 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Sophomore Jazmin Allen notched her seventh double-double of the season, putting up 11 points while securing 13 rebounds. Sydney Wyatt finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Next up, women's basketball will continue home play against Chowan this Saturday, January 15 at 2:00pm.
