PEMBROKE, NC - The women's basketball team traveled to North Carolina on Saturday to take on UNC Pembroke. The Braves defeated the Lions, 70-64, moving Emmanuel's record to 4-12 (4-9 CC).
The Lions led the way after the first 10 minutes, putting up 18 points versus 15 for the Braves. Emmanuel continued to increase their lead in the second quarter, gaining an eight point advantage with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. But three consecutive baskets for the Braves pulled them back within a possession. This resulted in Emmanuel's lead being 33-31 at the half.
Pembroke carried their momentum into the second half, while the Lions struggled to find a rhythm on offense. 5 of 15 from the field and 3 of 8 from the free throw line for Emmanuel resulted in the Braves gaining a four point lead by the end of the third quarter, 50-46.
The final quarter was close the entire way, but the Braves maintained a narrow advantage over the Lions. Pembroke was slowly able to increase their lead to seven points with less than a minute remaining. A three pointer from freshman Abby Crawford got the Lions back within four points, but with only 12 seconds on the clock there wasn't much more they could do. Courtney Smith sealed the game for the Braves, converting both free throws after getting fouled on the inbound. The final score was 70-64.
Junior Jeanetta Elder led the way for the Lions, recording a career high 21 points and adding 9 rebounds. Senior Allison Smith followed with 15 points and 2 rebounds.
Next up, women's basketball will face Converse University on Tuesday, February 1st at 5:00pm.
