Lions Roll Past Valkyries

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The women's basketball team hosted the Converse University Valkyries on Tuesday night. The Lions recorded an emphatic victory, winning 79-52 to move their record to 5-12 (5-9 CC).

Several Lions contributed to a productive first quarter on offense, including sophomore Sydney Wyatt, who knocked down back to back three pointers. With the score tied at 15, another three, this time from senior Allison Smith, was the final basket of the quarter. Throughout the second quarter the Lions consistently increased their lead thanks to an explosive offensive performance. Emmanuel put up 27 points in these 10 minutes alone, the final three coming off a 28 foot buzzer-beater by Smith. This set the Lions up with a 17 point lead at the break, 45-28.

The Lions dropped off in field goal percentage in the third quarter, but tough defense prevented Converse from being able to mount a comeback. The Lions only scored 13 in the quarter, but were able to hold the Valkyries to 9. The final 10 minutes saw the Lions resume the efficient offense seen in the first half as they increased their lead even more. Emmanuel finished 10 of 19 from three while shooting 49% from the field, enough to defeat Converse by 27 points, 79-52.

Sydney Wyatt led the offensive effort for Emmanuel, putting up 18 points while adding 3 boards and a pair of assists. Junior Jazmin Allen continues to be a double-double machine, recording her ninth of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Next up, women's basketball will face Erskine College on Thursday, February 3 at 5:00pm at the Shaw Athletic Center.
