Baseball Opens Season with Road Win Over Hawks

ROME, GA - The Emmanuel College Baseball team traveled to Rome, GA, to compete against the Shorter Hawks. Emmanuel defeated the Hawks 5-3 for the first win of their spring season. 
 
Shorter took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th when J. Barnes reached first on an error by the shortstop, leading to an RBI and P. Wittman scoring. 
 
Immediately after in the top of the 5th, Khalib Bayona singled to 1st, allowing Kyle LaCross and Guy Anderburg home to take a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, B. Campbell singled to right field, bringing Cody Minnis home and extending their lead to 3-1. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Shorter tied the game 3-3 after J. Pajer homered, bringing N. Leon home for another run. 
 
In the top of the 6th, Emmanuel regained the lead 4-3 after Bayona flied out, moving Anderburg to third while Judd Roberts scored. Shortly after Minnis flied out to right field, bringing in Anderburg to take a 5-3 advantage. 
 
After the 6th inning, Emmanuel shut out Shorter, keeping them from scoring another run which lead to their victory. 
 
Emmanuel had a successful night from the mound, only allowing 6 hits while striking out 7 batters. Dosie Drakeford pitched 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2 batters. Braden Henle pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 1 batter. Clifford Brown pitched one inning, allowing no hits and striking out 2 batters. Tyler Mayfield pitched 1 inning, allowing 1 hit and striking out one batter. 
 
The Emmanuel Baseball team hopes to follow this game with a successful weekend as they compete at home in a 4-game series against Lenoir-Rhyne University. The teams will compete on February 4th at 3:00 PM, February 5th at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, and February 6th at 1:00 PM.
