Lions Fall to Tornado in Five

BRISTOL, TN - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball team traveled to Bristol, TN, to compete against conference opponent King University. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, King was able to overcome the deficit and take the match 3-2, moving Emmanuel's record to 4-3 (1-1 CC). 
 
The Lions had an impressive start to the match. The team hit a cumulative 0.455% in the first set, scoring 14 kills on 22 attempts. The two teams found themselves tied at 21, until 2 errors by King and 2 kills from Eli Zdonek and Harrison Coelho brought the set to a close at 25-23. 
 
Emmanuel hit 0.343% in the second set, scoring 17 kills on 35 attempts. The Lions found themselves up early in the set, leading 16-10. The Lions held onto their lead, finishing the set on a kill by Gustavo Cavalcanti. The Lions took the second set 25-23, going up 2-0. 
 
The team hit a hitting slump in the third set. They hit 0.111% in the set, scoring 11 kills on 27 attempts. Emmanuel found themselves down early, with King holding a 18-10 lead. Ultimately, the deficit was too much for the Lions, losing the third set 17-25 (2-1). 
 
The team's hitting woes continued in the fourth set. They hit -0.19% in the set, scoring 5 kills on 21 attempts. After a few early errors, Emmanuel found themselves down 4-12 early in the set. King continued to extend their lead until the end of the set, winning 15-25 and taking the match into a 5th set. 
 
The men found themselves hitting better in the 5th set. They hit 0.148%, scoring 10 kills on 27 attempts. The team found themselves in an early deficit down 6-11. The Lions fought to bring the score within 2 points (10-12). However, two crucial errors from the Lions gave King two match points. JT Deppe scored one final kill, winning the set for King 15-12. The final score was 2-3. 
 
Eli Zdonek led the lions in kills with 17, followed by Carlos Guerrero with 14 and Gustavo Cavalcanti with 13. Henrick Westhoff led the team in assists with 53. Westhoff also led the team in aces with 2, followed by Harrison Coelho with 1. Nicklas Eichenberger led the team in digs with 9, followed by Westhoff with 7 and Cavalcanti with 6. Harrison Coelho and Carlos Guerrero led the team with 2 blocks each, followed by Jayden Young with 1. 
 
The Men's Volleyball team will continue their season on February 15th when they travel to Due West, SC, to compete against conference opponent Erskine College.
