Lions Go 1-1 in Road Doubleheader Against Saints

GAFFNEY, SC – The Emmanuel College softball team faced Limestone University on the road on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader. The Lions split the series, falling to the Saints in the opener before bouncing back with a closing victory. 
 
Game 1:
The Lions got things moving in the first inning, when an error scored the first run for Emmanuel. However, Limestone University pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Maddie Baker singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and Ashley Parnell singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.
 
Haley White got the start for Limestone University. The bulldog surrendered two runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out five.
 
Dani Fairey started the game for the Lions. The lefty allowed six hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking one. Kaitlyn Pickens threw two and a third innings in relief.
Lily Shelton led the Lions with two hits in three at bats.
 
 
Game 2:
The Lions took the lead late and defeated Limestone 5-3 in the second game of the afternoon. The game was tied at three with the Lions batting in the top of the sixth when Gabby Buffington homered on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.
Limestone University scored three runs in the third inning, but the Lions still managed to pull out the victory. Limestone University scored its runs on a home run by Ashley Parnell.
Emmanuel got things started in the second inning. The Lions scored two runs when Kasey Westmoreland singled.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Lions tied things up at three when Chloe Nadler's sac fly scored a run.
Madison Edwards got the start for the Lions. The righthander went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
 
Ragan Bristol was in the circle for Limestone University. The bulldog went one-third of an inning, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out one and walking zero. Makayla Cyzick and #77 entered the game as relief, throwing five innings and one and two-thirds innings respectively.
 
The Lions hit one home run on the day. Buffington had a homer in the sixth inning. The Lions collected eight hits. Lily Shelton and Brighton Harder each collected multiple hits for the Lions, leading the way with two each. Emmanuel  was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Shelton made the most plays with eight.
Katie Wilbur went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Limestone University in hits.
 
Next up, softball will host Mars Hill University on Saturday, February 19 for a double header beginning at 12:00pm.
